In Conversation with Bibi Marini

We interview the brains behind the newest addition to our lifestyle edit; Bibi Marini.

After studying gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in California and graduating with a BFA from Parsons School of Design, Bibi Marini returned to her homeland in Colombia to launch her jewellery label in 2003.

Her groundbreaking and fresh crochet inspired collections came to life while playing around with different beading techniques, but the true art of these pieces are rooted in her close work with local artisans and the use of traditional methods. The combination of carefully selected materials and specialist crochets kills ensure these pieces, though while packing a visual punch, are incredibly lightweight and gentle on the ear.

Always mindful of her pieces being 100% made in Colombia, s Bibi’s openness to discovering the unknown, allow her to create unique, feminine and lightweight pieces that define her and her brand.

Bibi describes her products as pieces you can carry in your handbag and throw on at the end of a long day to instantly take your outfit from desktop to cocktail lounge- and we couldn’t agree more. She revealed that her husband often books surprise dinner dates, and she grew frustrated with never knowing how to dress- not knowing where she was going- and designed with the notion in mind that whatever your outfit, the simple addition of a Bibi Marini piece would instantly transform your look for a totally different occasion.

We interview the designer below.

Q

What inspired you to start Bibi Marini?

A

I have always been a creative person and love making things! The idea of making jewellery was something that interested me.

Q

How did you establish your unique style?

A

Having worked for a long time and finally having a timeless, functional style both for myself and for my clients.

Q

Tell us about the artisans which you use to create these beautiful pieces?

A

In our workshop the earrings are made by women, single mothers, heads of their families that have been working with me for over 15 years

Q

Why is it important to support these local artisans in Columbia?

A

Apart from our day to day team, we do work with artisans spread around Colombia that by selling us their products not only feed their families but keep artisanal traditions alive.

Q

Tell us about how your studies in Gemology led you into jewellery design?

A

They really compliment each other…. It’s very interesting not only to understand the process of the metal but also the provenance of stones

Q

We understand you also attended the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York. Tell us a bit about your experience there, being one of the most competitive fashion schools in the world?

A

Loved Parsons! At the time jewellery was very much linked to the art department and it was a wonderful experience to be in NYC.

Q

If you could choose anyone, who would you most love to see your pieces on?

A

All my friends!

Q

Where do you find the inspiration for your designs?

A

Really everywhere, from works of art to our beautiful Colombian nature.

Q

What is your favourite piece from our Bibi Marini edit here at PAOLITA?

A

I love mini sundrops! Very easy to wear and really help bring a casual outfit to a dressier one…

Q

What is your favourite item of clothing that you could not live without in your own wardrobe?

A

Jeans!
