What to Wear in Greece: A Paolita Packing Guide

There is a certain quality of light in Greece that I have never been able to find anywhere else in the world. It lands on whitewashed walls and makes them glow. It turns the sea every shade of blue that you did not know existed. And it does something to colour — to the reds, the terracottas, the golds — that makes everything feel more vivid, more alive.

Greece is where I grew up. It is the country that taught me how to look at things. And it is, in many ways, where Paolita was born — not in the literal sense, but in spirit. Every hand-drawn print I create carries some trace of the Mediterranean in it: an ancient tile, a Byzantine motif, the shimmer of the Aegean in the afternoon.

So when people ask me what to pack for Greece, I take it personally. Here is my honest, considered guide.

Start with your swimwear

and make it count

Greece is, above all else, a place for the sea. Whether you are island-hopping through the Cyclades, staying at a cliff-top villa in Santorini, or spending a lazy week at a resort on the Peloponnese coast, you will spend a great deal of time in, on, or beside the water.

This is not the place for a throwaway bikini. The Greek light is honest — it shows everything — and the setting is too beautiful for anything that does not feel special. I always recommend packing two or three swimwear pieces that you truly love, rather than five that you feel indifferent about.

A printed one-piece is endlessly versatile: it works at the beach, at lunch poolside, and with wide-leg trousers and sandals as an impromptu top for exploring a harbour village. A bikini with a statement print gives you the joy of colour against all that blue. Choose pieces with intention.

The Kaftan

your most essential piece

If I could recommend only one thing to pack for a week in Greece, it would be a kaftan. There is simply no more effortless garment for the Mediterranean. It moves beautifully in the sea breeze. It covers your shoulders when you visit a church or a chapel. It transforms a bikini into a lunch outfit in seconds.

Look for a kaftan in a lightweight fabric — silk, viscose, or fine cotton — and do not be afraid of colour and print. Greece is not a place for restraint. The landscape itself is bold: cobalt domes, burnt-orange cliffs, bougainvillea in shades that should not exist. Your wardrobe can be bold too.
